What's left behind the scenes

  • Charles Dance was specifically instructed to emphasize his British accent, even though he was playing the President of the United States. Directors Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson, and Guy Maddin later revealed that they had made this decision a long time ago, although the actor could, if necessary, speak in a way that would pass him off as a native American. Various reasons were given for this decision, but it ultimately came down to the directors wanting to somehow surprise the audience and make their characters act in an unconventional way. Charles Dance himself insisted on including a scene in the plot where his character, the President of the United States, explains why he speaks like a native of Great Britain. The filmmakers shot the scene and almost immediately cut it from the film.
