Short description
With King Richard off to the Crusades, Prince John and his slithering minion, Sir Hiss, set about taxing Nottingham's citizens with support from the corrupt sheriff - and staunch opposition by the wily Robin Hood and his band of merry men.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Approximately 350,000 drawings, over 100,000 sheets of celluloid, and 800 cartoon backgrounds were used in the making of 'Robin Hood'.
  • Due to the film's small budget, the Disney animators had to reuse animation sequences both from the film itself and borrowed from previous Disney films, including "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "The Jungle Book", "The Aristocats", "Cinderella", and "Alice in Wonderland".
  • Terry-Thomas's (1911-1990) famous gap tooth was used to portray the character voiced by the actor, Sir Hiss. It was through this gap that the snake's forked tongue would protrude from his mouth.
  • Initially, Friar Tuck was planned to be a badger, but was ultimately made a bear to avoid accusations of offending religious believers. Sheriff Nottingham was first planned to be a goat, but was made a wolf because antagonists are traditionally associated with wolves.
  • Months before the film's release, the animators required Peter Ustinov (1921-2004) to re-record some of Prince John's lines. In their search for an actor, the animators called New York, London, Paris, Vienna, and Tokyo, only to discover Ustinov at a studio in Burbank, California, about a mile and a half away from them.
  • Due to the film's small budget, Disney animators had to reuse animation sequences both from the film itself and borrowed from previous Disney films, including 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' 'The Jungle Book,' 'The Aristocats,' 'Cinderella,' and 'Alice in Wonderland.'
