  • The film is based on Dusan Kovacevic's play "Spring in January".
  • Filming took place across Eastern Europe. Emir Kusturica shot at the famous Czech Barrandov Studios, then moved to Belgrade, working in Prague, Sofia, Berlin, and the Bulgarian town of Plovdiv. The film was also shot near the Reichstag.
  • Members of the Yugoslav Film Academy voted for 'Underground' as the third best Serbian film created between 1947 and 1995.
  • Emir Kusturica himself and "Doctor" Nele Karajlić, the leader of the band "The No Smoking Orchestra" – in which Kusturica plays guitar – appeared in two cameo roles in the film.
  • The television version has a runtime of 300 minutes and is divided into 6 episodes.
