What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of Sarah was offered to Elizabeth Taylor, but she turned it down.
  • The film's title contains a play on words. Initially, Sarah's means of transportation was a mule, but it went lame, and she exchanged it for a donkey (younger and smaller in size), which is not actually a mule. Therefore, the second 'mule' in the title could well be Clint Eastwood's character, Hogan, as Sarah says: 'You are as stubborn as my mule,' and later calls Hogan 'Mr. Mule'.
  • According to director Don Siegel (1912-1991), producer Martin Rakin (1918-1976) scrimped on everything during filming, which led to periodic clashes between them. According to Siegel, it was Rakin who insisted on casting unknown actors from Mexico in minor roles (completely unknown and therefore cheap) instead of already well-known American actors.
