Short description
Doctor Hugo Hackenbush, Tony, and Stuffy try and save Judy's farm by winning a big race with her horse. There are a few problems. Hackenbush runs a high priced clinic for the wealthy who don't know he has his degree in Veterinary Medicine.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Queen's album "A Day at the Races" was named after this film, just as the band's previous album – "A Night at the Opera" – was named after another Marx Brothers film.
  • Initially, the character played by Groucho Marx (1890-1977) was to be named Dr. Quackenbush (and both Marx and everyone else thought this surname was too absurd and silly to belong to a real person or to offend anyone). However, the lawyers of MGM studio soon discovered that at least a dozen doctors with that surname lived and practiced in the United States, and the character's surname was changed to “Hackenbush.” Marx initially objected, but later came to like this surname. He called Dr. Hackenbush his favorite character of all those he had played, and sometimes even signed letters to friends with that name.
  • Two weeks after filming began, producer Irving Thalberg (1899-1936) passed away. It was largely thanks to him that the Marx Brothers regained their star status by appearing in Sam Wood's (1883-1949) film “A Night at the Opera” (1935), and it was he who always supported them at MGM studio. Groucho Marx later claimed that with the death of Thalberg, he lost all interest in the acting profession.
