What's left behind the scenes

  • Work on the film began in mid-August 1973 in Mexico City. With a few exceptions, the crew was entirely Mexican.
  • Filming began at the end of September 1973 and ended three days before Christmas.
  • In the October issue of Variety magazine, Peckinpah was quoted as saying: “For me, Hollywood no longer exists. It has become history. I decided to stay in Mexico, as I believe I can make my films with more freedom here.” The unions of film and television workers openly condemned this statement at the National Conference in Detroit and threatened to boycott the film. In his defense, Peckinpah stated that he had been misquoted.
