What's left behind the scenes

  • Judy Greer's husband is a big fan of the film "Planet of the Apes" (1968). In an interview, Greer said that their wedding cake even featured chimpanzee bride and groom figurines on top, and when it was time for cocktails, the original film and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011) were playing on two televisions at the bar.
  • This is the first "Planet of the Apes" film shot and released in 3D.
  • Terry Notary previously worked as a movement coach on the film "Planet of the Apes" (2001).
  • An orangutan named Maurice is a reference to Maurice Evans, who played Dr. Zaius in the original "Planet of the Apes" (1968).
  • This is the first "Planet of the Apes" film shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
  • The director of the first film, Rupert Wyatt, left the project in 2012 when he felt he wouldn't have enough time to realize all his ideas in the sequel. James Franco also withdrew from the continuation along with the director.
  • The phrase “A monkey won’t kill another monkey,” mentioned several times in the film, is nothing more than an allusion to one of the commandments from George Orwell’s *Animal Farm*: “No animal shall kill any other animal.”
  • Actors Andy Serkis (Caesar) and Toby Kebbell (Koba) have played King Kong. Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson’s *King Kong* (2005), where, in addition to King Kong himself, he also played the small role of cook Lumpy, and Toby Kebbell in *Kong: Skull Island* (2017), where, in addition to King Kong himself, he also played the minor role of Major Jack Chapman. Notably, the secondary characters in both films die by the middle of the film at the hands of the monsters from the island, but not King Kong.
  • When Malcolm is gathering belongings in his room to go repair the dam, Ellie’s left hand appears on Malcolm’s shoulder, then disappears with each change of frame.
  • Several times, when the heroes enter the subway (the BART tunnel under San Francisco Bay), they jump over classic turnstiles. In reality, the stations on this tunnel have turnstiles of a more modern design.
  • In the film, people and monkeys mostly shoot from M16 rifles, which have magazines designed for 30 rounds. However, all the characters fire far more shots without changing magazines.
  • Judy Greer's husband is a big fan of "Planet of the Apes" (1968). In an interview, Greer said that their wedding cake even featured chimpanzee figurines as the bride and groom, and during cocktail hour, the original film and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011) were shown on two televisions.
  • Gary Oldman was considered for the role of General Taid in "Planet of the Apes" (2001). He played the role of Dreyfuss in that film.
  • The character Judy Greer, Cornelia, is a reference to the chimpanzee named Cornelius from the film "Planet of the Apes" (1968), played by Roddy McDowall.
  • Andy Serkis, Terry Notary, and Karin Konoval are the only actors to reprise their roles from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011).
  • The book Alexander (Kodi Smit-McPhee) gives to Maurice is "Black Hole" by Charles Burns. It's a story about a sexually transmitted disease among American teenagers that caused physical mutations, resulting in the teenagers becoming outcasts and living in the woods. The book's plot is largely similar to the story of "Planet of the Apes."
  • Terry Notary previously worked as a movement coach on the film "Planet of the Apes" (2001).
  • The orangutan named Maurice is a reference to Maurice Evans, who played Dr. Zaius in the original "Planet of the Apes" (1968).
