Short description
An American actor in Tokyo struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese 'rental family' agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients' worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Brendan Fraser (who played Philip), during filming he rented a porcupine, and soon he faced the question: what if he became attached to the animal that he would ultimately have to return to its owner? Fraser stated that this situation (temporary ownership, surrogate attachment, and the inevitability of separation) constitutes the essence of the ethical and moral dilemma at the heart of the narrative.
