Short description
Santiago, capital of Chile during the Marxist government of elected, highly controversial president Salvador Allende. Father McEnroe supports his leftist views by introducing a program at the prestigious "collegio" (Catholic prep school) St. Patrick to allow free admission of some proletarian kids. One of them is Pedro Machuca, slum-raised son of the cleaning lady in Gonzalo Infante's liberal-bourgeois home. Yet the new classmates become buddies, paradoxically protesting together as Gonzalo gets adopted by Pedro's slum family and gang. But the adults spoil that too, not in the least when general Pinochet's coup ousts Allende, and supporters such as McEnroe.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Due to extreme budget constraints, the film was shot only on Sundays, when the actors were free from their primary jobs.
  • Due to the fact that the Chilean film industry was only just emerging during this period, there were very few professional actors in the country. As the young actors were not professionals and had no prior experience, the director began working with them seven months before the actual filming process began.
  • The book that Gonzalo’s mother’s friend gives him to read is “The Lone Ranger” – a story about a man in the Wild West who befriended a Native American.
  • The shot of the plane flying overhead at the end of the film reflects a real event: a plane sent to bomb the presidential palace in Santiago during the military coup.
