A significant portion of the film was shot on location – in a prison. Actors and crew members were warned in writing that no one would come to their rescue if they were taken hostage by the inmates. At one point, the prison authorities ordered bulletproof vests to be issued to the actors. However, the quartermaster told the actors that the vests would likely be of little use, as "the inmates would first try to gouge out their eyes."
