Short description
Evgeniy Onegin lives in grand style: balls, receptions, theater premieres and other frivolities the capital can offer a young man. But social life has long tired him, so he perceives the news of the illness of his uncle living in the village as an opportunity to escape. However, having reached the estate, Onegin learns about the death of a relative, which, however, does not upset Evgeniy too much. His financial affairs are very sad, and his uncle is rich and has no other heirs. Onegin locks himself in the estate, living in aimless solitude until the owner, who has returned from abroad, appears at the neighboring estate – a young, enthusiastic Vladimir Lenskiy, not yet satiated with life, who introduces Evgeniy to sisters Tatyana and Olga Larin.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Most of the film was shot in St. Petersburg. Several streets were specially built in the city for the filming.
  • Over 400 costumes were sewn for the film's characters, approximately 200 pieces of jewelry were made, 120 pairs of shoes, 180 shawls, and more than 30 designer hats.
  • More than 2000 light bulbs imitating candlelight, unique in their kind, were invented and manufactured from scratch for the project. In addition, over a hundred brass door handles in the Empire style were cast by hand, based on drawings taken from historical door handles of estates and palaces.
  • The Baron Stieglitz mansion in St. Petersburg, a cultural heritage site, was restored and partially renovated, and key scenes of the film were shot there.
  • Around 150 paintings were created by a team of artists. All sketches were created by the production designer of the project – Eliza Kalachyan.
  • For the filming, a stable and blacksmith's workshop were recreated in the Yelagin Palace based on historical data from the 19th century.
