What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Lewis Carroll's tale "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865).
  • Mia Wasikowska, the first of the actors announced to the press for the project, was cast four months before filming began.
  • Johnny Depp joked in one interview that he could have played all the roles in the film. He was subsequently chosen for the role of the Mad Hatter.
  • The film is based on the tale of the same name by Lewis Carroll and its sequel, "Through the Looking-Glass".
  • Filming with live actors lasted only 40 days.
  • Amanda Seyfried and Lindsay Lohan auditioned for the role of Alice.
  • Mia Wasikowska, who plays Alice, is 5 feet 4 inches tall in real life. Throughout the film, Alice's height constantly changes – from 6 inches to 20 feet. A lot of work went into using more practical methods of changing height than special effects; often, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) had to use stilts to be taller than the others.
  • The film's soundtrack was composed by well-known rock bands Tokio Hotel and Franz Ferdinand, as well as Canadian singer Avril Lavigne and The Cure vocalist Robert Smith.
  • Only three sets were built for the film.
  • The film retains characters, plot elements, and central themes from Lewis Carroll's books ( *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland*, 1865; *Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There*, 1871), but it is a completely new story. Alice returns to Wonderland, where she was as a child, but she has no memories of her previous adventures.
  • Well-known young actress Dakota Blue Richards auditioned for the role of Alice. However, due to the age difference (the script called for an 18-year-old heroine) and a number of plot twists, including a love affair with the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), 14-year-old (at the time) Blue Richards was turned down.
