- After the film was poorly received by audiences at a preview screening, the studio demanded that the director make changes, but received a refusal. Instead of the fired Sam Peckinpah, the assistant director of montage, Edward M. Abrams, took over editing and radically changed the film's ending.
- Robert Ladlum offered to rewrite the overly convoluted original script for free.
- The director's cut has a runtime of 116 minutes.
