What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Julie Andrews refused an offer to play the lead role in the film. She soon changed her mind, remembering that she owed a great deal to Walt Disney, and informed the film company of her agreement, but by that time Angela Lansbury had already been cast.
- Angela Lansbury detested what she called filming "by numbers," as was the case with this film, for which a detailed storyboard had been made in advance, so that every actor's movement was pre-written in the script and had to be followed strictly. Lansbury felt that the storyboard constrained her and prevented her from fully portraying her character.
