The film is based on Cassandra Clare's novel "City of Bones" (2007).
Scott Charles Stewart could have been the director of the project.
Initially, the role of Jace Wayland was offered to Alex Pettyfer, but he declined.
Besides Jamie Campbell Bower, contenders for the role of Jace Wayland included Alexander Ludwig, Edward Speleers, Xavier Samuel, Nico Tortorella, Max Irons, Douglas Booth, and Benjamin Stone.
Besides Robert Sheehan, contenders for the role of Simon Lewis included Logan Lerman, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Asher Monroe, and Carter Jenkins.
Besides Kevin Zegers, Ed Westwick was also considered for the role of Alec Lightwood.
Filming took place from August 20 to November 7, 2012, in Hamilton (Ontario), Toronto, and New York.
Chris Riggs auditioned for a role in the film.
