What's left behind the scenes

  • The extended version of the film is 159 minutes long.
  • "The Act of Killing" was named the best documentary film at the 2014 BAFTA Awards. Accepting the award, Oppenheimer stated that the United States and the United Kingdom bear "collective responsibility" for "ignoring and participating" in crimes; however, this speech was cut from the video posted on the BAFTA website. Oppenheimer demanded that members of the US Congress acknowledge the United States' role in the killings.
  • The film was shot primarily in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, from 2005 to 2011, resulting in approximately 1200 hours of footage.
  • After seeing a preview of the film, directors Werner Herzog and Errol Morris became executive producers within ten minutes of watching it.
  • The word "anonymous" appears 49 times in 27 different positions of the film's creators in the credits, as they feared retribution from death squads.
