Short description
A rule bound head butler's world of manners and decorum in the household he maintains is tested by the arrival of a housekeeper who falls in love with him in post-WWI Britain. The possibility of romance and his master's cultivation of ties with the Nazi cause challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.

- No one on the film crew had the slightest idea about how a large British estate functioned, or the details of the life of butlers. Kazuo Ishiguro, the screenwriter and author of the original literary source, didn't even hide this and emphasized that all of this had to be figured out as the novel was being written. Anthony Hopkins was so afraid of doing something wrong that he even asked for an experienced butler to be found and hired as a consultant. His request was fulfilled, and Cyril Dickman, a retired butler of Queen Elizabeth II, became the consultant, and he subsequently advised who else could be consulted. The fact is that in large estates, there has always been a hierarchical ladder among the servants and a strict division of responsibilities.
