- The film's original title is a term from baseball statistics.
- While working on his physical fitness (he needed to tone his glutes), Austin Butler enlisted the help of a professional trainer. His workouts included exercises for the lower body that activate the gluteal muscles, as well as muscle groups in the lower back and legs. Director Darren Aronofsky wanted Butler's appearance to hint at problems with alcohol, so pizza, which he washed down with beer, was included in the actor's diet. When Butler began training, he weighed 70 kg and gained 15 kg in six months.
- The cat trainer for Tonic explained to Austin Butler how and when to feed the animal. Director and producer Darren Aronofsky said that working with Tonic was much more comfortable than working with many human actors.
