What's left behind the scenes

  • The animated film is based on the autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, "Grave of the Fireflies" (Hotaru no Haka, 1967).
  • To find children to voice Setsuko and Seita, Isao Takahata went to Kobe. There he found five-year-old Ayano Shiraishi.
  • The film adaptation of the book was considered a project destined for commercial success due to its educational value. Therefore, the film was released alongside Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988) to promote it to audiences. Ultimately, both films were purchased by many school boards for showing to students.
