• The screenplay for "Drops of Rain on Hot Stones" is based on the play of the same name (German: Tropfen auf heiße Steine) written by Rainer Werner Fassbinder at the age of nineteen, but never staged by him. However, François Ozon deviated from the provocative nature of the original source: in the play, Leopold was Jewish, and Franz was of pure German descent. Moreover, in Fassbinder's version, Leopold bears the surname Blum, meaning the name of the play's protagonist completely coincides with the name of the main character in James Joyce's novel "Ulysses."
• François Ozon's film, all of whose events unfold in Leopold's apartment, is deliberately theatrical. To this end, the director even preserved the structure of the play – the film is divided into separate acts.
• The world premiere of the film took place on February 13, 2000, at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film participated in the main competition and received the Teddy Award as the best film of the festival addressing the issues of sexual minorities.
• "Raindrops on Hot Stones" is the first film shown as part of Kirill Razlogov's "Cult Cinema" series, broadcast on the Russian TV channel "Kultura."
