George Reeves was originally going to be played by Hugh Jackman or Kyle MacLachlan, and Louis Simo by Benicio Del Toro or Joaquin Phoenix.
The film marked Allen Coulter's feature film directorial debut, after having previously directed extensively for television.
Ben Affleck took his role very seriously: “Allen Coulter, the director, and I felt a huge responsibility: we had to understand what kind of person he was so that I could portray him as accurately as possible. So I sifted through a lot of information, paid close attention to all the details. Fortunately, a lot has been written about Reeves. I also watched 104 episodes of the ‘Superman’ series, many of his films, even ‘Gone with the Wind,’ where he played a very small role. All of this helped me a lot.”
