The film is based on a book compiled from the letters of General Tadamiichi Kuribayashi of the Imperial Japanese Army, who led the defense of Iwo Jima (played by Ken Watanabe in the film).
Clint Eastwood initially wanted to title the film "Red Sun, Black Sand".
The film is the Japanese part of a diology, filmed on Iwo Jima at almost the same time; the film crews met and collaborated with each other, but officially only one person appeared in both films.
While working on the role, Ken Watanabe read all the letters sent from Iwo Jima to his family by General Tadamiichi Kuribayashi of the Imperial Japanese Army.
A GAZ-69A, produced from 1952 to 1972, was used as the Japanese military vehicle in the filming.
The film was shot on Iwo Jima itself, as well as in Iceland and California.
An American light military transport aircraft, the Beech C-45F “Expeditor,” was used in the filming to represent the aircraft on which Japanese General Kuribayashi arrived on the island. It apparently was intended to depict the Kawasaki Ki-56 Japanese transport aircraft.
