The film's original title was "And I Dreamed a Dream".
The film consists of eight parts, but initially there were three more, which had to be cut due to time constraints. The excised parts concerned people flying through the air, Buddhist monks protesting a tax on temples, and television announcers proclaiming the advent of world peace.
The house in the part of the film called "Sunlight Through Rain" is a replica of the house where Kurosawa lived as a child.
While working on the script, Kurosawa imagined Martin Scorsese playing the role of Van Gogh, whom he had met seven years prior.
Kurosawa faced financial difficulties as Japanese studios refused to invest in the project, seeing it as a political pamphlet against nuclear energy. Kurosawa sent a copy of the script to Steven Spielberg, who helped "place" the film.
A fragment from the film is included in Richard Linklater's "Waking Life" (2001).
