Short description
A teenage girl is captured by a giant mutated squid-like creature that appears from Seoul's Han River after toxic waste was dumped in it, prompting her family into a frantic search for her.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The original title of the film translates as "The Monster".
  • The film set local box office and attendance records that lasted for 6 years.
  • Since the film was shot in real sewage tunnels of the Han River, the entire film crew was required to get tetanus shots.
  • The event depicted at the beginning of the film actually happened. In February 2000, a civilian employee at a military base in central Seoul was ordered to pour formaldehyde into the sewer system that led to the Han River. The Korean bystanders were outraged, but the serviceman, whose last name was McFarland, carried out the order. The South Korean government demanded a trial, but the Americans categorically refused to hand McFarland over to local law enforcement. Subsequently, a South Korean court sentenced McFarland in absentia. The Korean public was shocked by the government's inability to apply the law to Americans on its own territory. In 2005, McFarland finally stood trial.
  • The splashes in the moments where the monster dives were created by throwing metal barrels into the water.
  • Director Bong Joon-ho and the film crew nicknamed the monster Steve Buscemi. This is because it reminded them of the characters played by Buscemi, and especially his performance in the Coen brothers' dramatic thriller 'Fargo' (1995).
  • The scene at the wake, in which Nam-il (Park Hae-il) hits Kang-du (Song Kang-ho), was improvised.
  • In a news report covering the panic that has gripped the population, immediately after footage showing the building of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister John Manley briefly appears on screen.
  • The film's title translates to "The Monster".
  • Director Bong Joon-ho and the film crew nicknamed the monster Steve Buscemi. Because it reminded them of the characters played by Buscemi, and especially his performance in "Fargo".
  • The film, featuring a fully computer-generated character, was revolutionary for Korean cinema at the time, and actor Song Kang-ho was very interested in participating in such a project.
  • Filming took place from June 29, 2005, to January 8, 2006.
  • The film's title translates to "Monster."
  • Director Bong Joon-ho and the film crew nicknamed the creature Steve Buscemi. This is because it reminded them of characters played by Buscemi, and especially his performance in "Fargo".
