The working title of the film was "Proteus".
Filming took place on Lake Michigan (Illinois) and in studio pavilions in the United Kingdom.
Darren Aronofsky was originally the director of the film and began preparations for filming as early as 1999, but he later abandoned the project in favor of "Requiem for a Dream" (2000).
The song playing on the gramophone aboard the submarine was intended to be Frank Sinatra's "I'll Be Seeing You," but it was replaced with Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)" due to copyright issues.
Some scenes were filmed on a real World War II submarine – the "Silversides," moored in Muskegon, Michigan, as a museum exhibit. It was transported to Lake Michigan and repainted with dull, rusty paint to enhance realism, and then restored to its original appearance after filming.
