What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was considered immoral in the Soviet Union and was therefore banned from release.
  • Revi's room features a poster for the cult Western "Wild Bunch".
  • The characters mainly drink "Heireken" beer, the bottle and label design of which is very similar to the Dutch beer "Heineken". Sometimes they drink "Singha Beer", a brand of beer that actually exists in Thailand.
  • The poster advertising the second season parodies the "Play with us" scene from Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining".
  • Employees of "Laguna" use a Plymouth Road Runner. In the second season (after the incident with Jane) they switched to a Pontiac GTO.
  • One of the techniques used by the series creators is the abundant quoting of films that have become classics of adventure cinema. Interestingly, all the quoted films were released before the series' timeline.
  • The German submarine (featuring the "laughing swordfish" emblem, a fly on the portrait) in the "Return of the Eagle" series is a reference to the film "Das Boot" (1981).
  • Roberta's shootout with the Manisera cartel in the "Yellow Flag" bar, and a similar scene involving Fabiola, is a repetition of a scene from the film "Desperado" (1995).
  • Scenes of Roberta exiting a burning building, and then chasing after a car, precisely replicate corresponding episodes from the film "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991).
  • The gang of neo-Nazis is parodied from the film "The Blues Brothers" (1980).
  • Revy's characteristic grunting, reproduced during the boarding of the "White Heather," is a reference to the film "Assault" (1992).
  • The paratroopers’ deployment in “Hotel Moscow” following Balalaika mirrors a similar scene from the film “Die Hard 2” (1990). The difference is that in the film, people move facing the camera, while in the anime, the camera shows the backs of the departing people.
  • Mr. Chan carries pistols in the same manner as the hero in Nicolas Cage’s “Face/Off” (1997) – two holsters attached to the back of his trousers.
  • Revy primarily smokes Marlboro Light, and Miss Balalaika smokes Parliament in one of the episodes. Chan smoked Gitanes in one episode, and Rock was seen smoking Natural American Spirit in several episodes. In the seventh episode of the first season, Revy and Rock smoked Natural American Spirit Medium together. In later episodes, Rock smokes cigarettes with a Japanese flag on the packaging.
  • A group of mercenaries appears in the early episodes, modeled after the private military company Executive Outcomes which operated in Africa in the 1990s (similar name, and they also had Soviet-made “Mi” helicopters in their arsenal).
  • At the end of episode 18, Ed’s sister says the phrase “God’s in his Heaven, All’s right with the world” from Robert Browning’s play “Pippa Passes.” This phrase is also well-known as the motto of the NERV agency in the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
  • It's very strange, but the name "Black Lagoon" (excluding the credits) is used only once in the series. Dutch's logistics company is called "Laguna," and he uses the same callsign during radio communication.
  • The titles of episodes 10 and 12 of the second season ("The Dark Tower" and "The Gunslingers" respectively) are a clear reference to Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" cycle.
  • There is a newspaper in the opening credits of each episode. Some details from the episodes become clear from the portion of text that can be read.
  • In episode 27, it is visible that the name of the medication Roberta is taking is Rilalin, methylphenidate. The real medication is Ritalin, also known as methylphenidate.
  • The boat has a search radar capable of detecting air and surface targets, however the radar antenna itself is nowhere to be seen.
  • In the 15th episode, "Swan Song at Dawn," Gretel has Edo in the sights of a machine gun, with a distance of about a meter between them. When Gretel reaches for the pistol around Edo's waist, the machine gun cannot be aimed at his head, as the arm length of the little girl would not be sufficient.
