What's left behind the scenes

  • The cockroaches were delivered to the set in a kind of “deep freeze.” They were placed where needed for filming and thawed out with hair dryers. Those involved in the filming process could only hope that the cockroaches would behave as expected. No one knows where these cockroaches ran off to after the episode was finished filming!
  • Tom Selleck was originally intended to play Marshan. However, by the time filming began, Selleck was completely booked with work on the popular series "Magnum, P.I." (1980-8), and the role went to James Garner.
  • Ernest Day was initially slated to be the film's cinematographer.
  • Robert Preston's final musical number was filmed in one take.
  • In an interview, director Blake Edwards confessed that when King Marshan first kissed Victor/Victoria, saying "I don't care if you're a man or a woman," in the initial cut he genuinely didn't know whether he/she was a man or a woman. But fearing impropriety, Edwards inserted a scene in which King peeks at Victoria bathing, and thus learns of her gender beforehand.
