What's left behind the scenes

  • The version shown at the Cannes Film Festival is 25 minutes longer than the released version. Approximately four minutes were cut from the motorcycle race at the beginning of the film, seven minutes from the drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats scene, and six minutes of black screen and music from the end of the film.
  • Vincent Gallo's second directorial work caused a scandal at the Cannes Film Festival. More specifically, it was the biggest scandal in the last twenty years. Under boos and jeers from the audience, the director eventually had to go on stage and offer a formal apology for his work, while his girlfriend Chloë Sevigny wiped away tears hiding behind the stage.
  • After the first screening in Cannes, the famous American film critic Roger Ebert called "The Brown Bunny" the worst film in the history of the festival. Upon returning to the United States, Vincent Gallo re-edited the film. Ebert rated the shortened version three out of four stars (the festival's film critic rating system) and gave the title of worst film to "The Slaughter Rule" by Bryan Mendoza.
