Filming took place over three years in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve in Kamchatka. There were three expeditions with a total duration of 26 months. Several hundred hours of footage were shot.
The wind was not intended to be the main character of the film, however, it struck the filmmakers with its transformation during the shooting. The project team filmed the lives of several pairs of Kamchatka foxes, and the film was long titled "Kamchatka. A Tale in Foxes." But only one pair made it into the final cut – "Wind and Lava."
The uniqueness of the film lies in the fact that the same animal 'plays' the main character from beginning to end. As a rule, several animals are used to play the same role.
