After a quick read of the script, Antonio Banderas turned down the leading role when he realized the entire film was dedicated to ballroom dancing. The project's producers asked for a few minutes to explain the story behind the screenplay in more detail. After watching a short documentary and meeting Pierre Dulaine himself, the actor finally agreed and signed a contract to participate in the film.
Young actors who played the roles of the students worked with the real Pierre Dulaine for some time to learn how to correctly perform their dance moves in the film.
Pierre Dulaine appears in a cameo as one of the judges of the 25th annual ballroom dance competition.
The majority of the film, including all scenes inside the school and its surroundings, was shot at the well-known private school University of Toronto Schools in the Canadian city of Toronto.
When the film was released in the Philippines, the promotional posters listed Dante Basco as the film's lead actor.
