The accident involving Daniel Jackson aboard the ship was contrived specifically so that the character would not have to participate in the events that subsequently took place in the Arctic. Michael Shanks was unable to travel there for location shooting due to his work on the series "24" (2001-2014).
The scenes in the Arctic involving the surfacing and subsequent submerging of the submarine were not the product of special effects or computer technology. The American submarine USS Alexandria (SSN-757) participated in the filming. The captain and crew played themselves.
