Issa’s beguilingly idiosyncratic debut is, on paper, simplicity itself: a woman, a man, a noisy bar … the budding of attraction? But the film succeeds in transcending the limitations of narrative by its skillful sketching of milieu, especially the way it interpolates the live music being played in this underlit establishment—think Twin Peaks season 3 (or True Detective 2!). Conducted at a perfect tempo, it’s a likeably rough-edged gem guaranteed to strike chords.
