What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel by Winston Groom, 'Forrest Gump' (1986).
  • The film deviates significantly from Winston Groom’s original novel, in which Forrest Gump is depicted as a harsh, unbearable cynic. And the quote from the film, 'Life is like a box of chocolates,' is completely opposite to the thought from the novel, 'Being an idiot is not a box of chocolates.'
  • Tom Hanks agreed to participate in the filming on one condition: all events in the film must correspond to real historical events.
  • During the filming of one scene, Tom Hanks says: "My name is Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump." In fact, the actor flubbed his line, but director Robert Zemeckis liked it and included that take in the final version of the film.
  • Barry Sonnenfeld and Terry Gilliam could have been in the director's chair.
  • During the filming of the football scenes, Tom Hanks was sick with the flu, but he bravely endured and worked all the shifts.
  • Alexander Zemeckis (the director's son) and Elizabeth Hanks (the actor's daughter) appeared in cameo roles.
  • Warner Bros. relinquished the rights to this film in 1988, deeming the project commercially unviable following the release of 'Rain Man'.
  • Tom Hanks modeled Forrest's accent after Michael Conner Humphreys, who played young Gump and genuinely spoke with that accent in real life.
  • Almost all of John Lennon's lines for this film were taken from his song 'Imagine'.
  • With each change in Forrest's age, one thing remains constant – in the first scene of the next age, Forrest appears in a blue shirt.
  • Jenny's last name, Curran, appears in the film only once: on an envelope that was returned to Forrest in Vietnam.
  • Sally Field, who played Forrest's mother, is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks.
  • Initially, Bill Murray, John Travolta, and Chevy Chase were considered for the lead role.
  • During the filming of Tom Hanks' running scenes, his brother Jim Hanks often served as a stand-in.
  • Gary Sinise's severed legs were wrapped in special blue fabric during filming, allowing them to be digitally removed from the footage using computer special effects. Nevertheless, in some episodes, it's noticeable how Lieutenant Dan slightly leans on his missing limbs. Lieutenant Dan's wheelchair was also equipped with a special mirror system, similar to those used by magicians, and developed with the participation of Ricky Jay.
  • The scene in which Forrest receives the Medal of Honor was edited from archival footage of the awarding of First Class Private Sammy L. Davis (November 19, 1968), who sustained back and buttock injuries as a result of 'friendly fire'.
  • After Jenny (Robin Wright) dies, Forrest comes to visit her grave. He says, “You died on a Saturday.” However, the inscription on the tombstone contradicts this statement. It indicates a date of death of March 22, 1982 (Monday).
  • Filming took place from August 8 to December 9, 1993.
  • The film is based on Winston Groom's novel "Forrest Gump" (1986).
  • During the filming of one scene, Tom Hanks says, "My name is Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump." In fact, the actor misspoke, but director Robert Zemeckis liked it and included that take in the final version of the film.
  • During the filming of the football scenes, Tom Hanks was ill with the flu, but he bravely endured and worked all the shifts.
  • Almost all of John Lennon's lines for this film were taken from his song "Imagine".
  • Gary Sinise's "detached" legs during filming were wrapped in a special blue cloth, which allowed them to be erased from the frame using computer special effects. Nevertheless, in some episodes it is noticeable how Lieutenant Dan slightly leans on his missing limbs. Also, Lieutenant Dan's wheelchair was equipped with a special mirror system, similar to those used by magicians, and developed with the participation of Ricky Jay.
  • The scene in which Forrest receives the Medal of Honor was assembled from archival footage of the award ceremony for Private First Class Sammy L. Davis (November 19, 1968), who sustained back and buttock injuries as a result of 'friendly fire'.
