What's left behind the scenes
- Nick Shenk worked at a car factory and it was there he met the Hmong diaspora. The tragic fate of this people inspired him to write the screenplay.
- Clint Eastwood's youngest son, Scott Eastwood, starred in the film. And the film's music was composed by the director's eldest son, Kyle Eastwood.
- The script is set in a northeastern suburb of Minneapolis, but filming took place in Michigan.
- Eastwood wanted Hmong people to be featured in the film, and the casting director reached out to their organizations to recruit extras. The largest Hmong diasporas in the United States are located in Detroit, Fresno, and St. Paul.
- Like his character in 'Gran Torino,' Clint Eastwood is also a veteran of the Korean War.
