What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on a work by John Steinbeck.
  • The photographs of Alfred Hitchcock used for his cameo are genuine. The fact is that at the time, Hitchcock was on a strict diet (although he did not use the fictional Reduco, but another weight loss product) and lost weight from 130 to 90 kg. Hitchcock said: "Fat people simply flooded me with letters, wanting to know how to get their hands on the precious elixir."
  • Alfred Hitchcock invited Ben Hecht to rework the final part of the script.
  • During filming, some members of the crew reproached Tallulah Bankhead for not wearing underwear – this was particularly noticeable during scenes where the actress jumped over the side of the lifeboat. When Hitchcock was told about this, he ironically remarked: "I don't even know who to punish – the costume designer or the hairdresser."
  • As a result of prolonged exposure to cold water, most of the actors in this film contracted pneumonia.
  • After Tallulah Bankhead fell ill with pneumonia, Alfred Hitchcock gifted the actress a small puppy. This gift, according to the director's intention, was meant to give her optimism and self-confidence. Ironically, the puppy already had a name – "Hitchcock"!
  • A card role-playing board game based on the film, called "Lifeboat", was released, and also published in Russian under the title "Overboard!"
