The plot is based on the children's book of the same name by Raymond Briggs from 1978, a story told entirely through pictures, without words.
When the animated film was first shown in the US, viewers saw a version in which David Bowie (1947-2016) portrays the grown-up James and recalls the winter he met the Snowman. In the English version, Raymond Briggs himself introduces the film by talking about how snowy that winter was when he wrote his book, but Americans decided the film needed a world-renowned star in the introduction.
In the original book by Raymond Briggs (1934-2022), the boy had no name. The filmmakers needed a name for the gift wrapping that Santa Claus gives to the protagonist, and they chose “James” in honor of a friend, and later husband, of one of the animators.
