What's left behind the scenes

  • The film marked the directorial debut for Denzel Washington and the acting debut for Derek Luke.
  • The film's screenplay was written by Antoine Fischer at the suggestion of producer Todd Black in 1993, who became interested in his story. Denzel Washington expressed interest in the project as a director in 1996, after Black brought him the script and offered him the role of a psychologist. Washington met with Fischer, discussed the film project with him at length, and then decided to begin filming.
  • In 1996, while working in a Sony Pictures Studios gift shop, aspiring actor Derek Luke met Fischer, who was working there as a security guard, befriended him, and learned about the film project based on his screenplay, also meeting Washington himself, who mistook him for Fischer. After several auditions, Luke was cast in the lead role.
  • Filming took place on location in the vicinity of Cleveland and lasted two weeks, also encompassing its surroundings – Glenville, five weeks in San Diego, including at the US Navy base on 32nd Street, North Island Station, and the Point Loma suburb, aboard the USS Belleau Wood.
  • Antoine Fischer oversaw the filming, was on set every day, and participated in the editing process.
