The location where the plot begins is situated west of Charleston in Putnam County, West Virginia, but filming took place in Fayette County, east of Charleston.
Kate Bosworth, who played Rosalie, has heterochromia (different colored irises in the right and left eyes, or uneven coloration of different areas of the iris in one eye). Her right eye is brown, and her left eye is blue. This is noticeable in many scenes. However, in some scenes (for example, in the bedroom where Pete kisses her for the first time), the actress is shown with both eyes blue. Apparently, the director instructed her to wear contact lenses.
