• Work on the film began several years after the release of Richard Fleischer's 1985 film. In 2008, Robert Rodriguez was planning to shoot his own version of the film with Rose McGowan in the lead role, but the project was abandoned a year later. In 2010, Nu Image announced that Simon West would direct the film and Amber Heard would play the role of Sonia. The film was planned for release before the premiere of the fantasy action sequel "Conan the Barbarian." In 2012, West confirmed that work on the film was underway. In 2015, Christopher Cosmos was hired to write the script, and Millennium Films and Cinelou Films were responsible for financing and producing the project. In 2018, it was announced that Bryan Singer would direct the film, but a year later, due to allegations of sexual harassment against Singer, his services were declined. Joey Soloway took on the roles of screenwriter, director, and producer. In 2021, Soloway and Tasha Huo submitted a joint screenplay. Hanna John-Kamen was cast in the lead role, but she left the project in 2022. Soloway was replaced as director by M.J. Bassett, who also rewrote the previous script.
