What's left behind the scenes

  • The first film in the series not produced by Kathleen Kennedy.
  • After the release of the third installment of the franchise in 2001, work on a sequel stalled for over ten years. In 2011, at San Diego Comic-Con, Steven Spielberg announced that work on the screenplay for the fourth installment was currently underway. In June 2012, it became known that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver would be the authors of the final version of the script. In March 2013, it was announced that Colin Trevorrow would direct the film. In November 2013, it became known that Chris Pratt was in negotiations for the lead role, and in February 2014 his participation was confirmed.
  • Filming began on April 14, 2014, in Hawaii.
  • The original title of the film was "Jurassic Park 4: Extinction." But in September 2013, the film was renamed "Jurassic World."
  • The gyrosphere was Steven Spielberg's idea. The set for the scenes with the gyrosphere was built in a valley near Kualoa Ranch, located in Oahu (Honolulu, Hawaii, USA).
  • When the film was in early development, Harrison Ford was planned to star in it, but he ultimately left the project.
  • Armie Hammer, Henry Cavill, Glenn Howerton, Jason Sudeikis, Garrett Hedlund, Josh Brolin, John Krasinski, Chris Pratt, and Jason Statham were considered for the role of Owen. Pratt eventually landed the role.
  • Michael Giacchino replaced John Williams as the film's composer. Interestingly, Williams became the composer for J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015). Giacchino had written music for all of Abrams' previous films, while Williams composed the music for two of the three previous "Jurassic Park" films, and some of his musical themes were used in the third.
  • The film's script was written in three weeks, and the studio insisted that production begin as early as June 2013. However, Steven Spielberg decided that more time was needed to make a truly good film and halted the premature start of production. Spielberg only approved the script in September 2013.
  • This is the first film in the series not shot at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Louisiana was chosen instead due to the significant tax incentives offered there.
  • The majority of the film was shot in 35mm. However, 65mm cameras were used for location shooting in Hawaii. One of the 65mm cameras used on this film had previously been used to film Stanley Kubrick's «2001: A Space Odyssey» (1968).
  • The Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida, was thoroughly researched when creating the park's control room. Designers also partially based it on NASA's control center.
  • One of the ideas for the film's script was soldiers genetically crossed with dinosaurs. This idea was proposed by John Sayles as early as 2004, but it was rejected.
  • During the audition process, Ty Simpkins and Nick J. Robinson were asked to sit and scream, pretending a dinosaur was about to eat them.
  • Kristen Stewart was considered for the role of Claire, but was ultimately deemed too young for the part.
  • During filming, to avoid information leaks, the project was codenamed "Ebb Tide." This title was chosen by Steven Spielberg long before Colin Trevorrow joined the project.
  • Jason Schwartzman was considered for the role of Lowry, but the part ultimately went to Jake Johnson.
  • The idea of using sharks as food for the dinosaurs came from director Colin Trevorrow. He was inspired by Steven Spielberg's 1975 film "Jaws."
  • The scene of the gallimimus stampede was filmed at Kualoa Ranch, near the location where a similar scene was filmed for "Jurassic Park" (1993).
  • When the dinosaur grabbed the transparent bubble with its teeth, it began to slam it against the ground. Children were inside, with their backs to the ground and facing the dinosaur. When the older brother unbuckled their seatbelts, they magically fell to the ground quickly, and afterwards it’s visible that the backs of the seats are facing towards the dinosaur’s mouth, while they are facing the ground.
  • While fleeing from the dinosaur, Zach and Gray jumped into the water, but after a while Zach asks his brother for matches, which, apparently, were wet and unusable.
  • At the end of the film, when the main group of heroes was surrounded by raptors, Owen threw his weapon on the ground to avoid provoking Blue (the raptor's name) into a negative reaction. With the change of shots, it can be noticed how the weapon appears in his right hand and then disappears.
  • The film's original title was "Jurassic Park 4: Extinction." However, in September 2013, the film was renamed "Jurassic World."
  • Michael Giacchino replaced John Williams as the film's composer. Interestingly, Williams became the composer for J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015). Giacchino had written music for all of Abrams' previous films, while Williams had composed music for two of the three previous "Jurassic Park" films, and some of his musical themes were used in the third.

  • During filming, the project was known as "Ebb Tide" to avoid information leaks. This title was chosen by Steven Spielberg long before Colin Trevorrow joined the project.
  • The idea of using sharks as food for dinosaurs belongs to director Colin Trevorrow. He was inspired by Steven Spielberg's 1975 film 'Jaws'.
  • The scene of the panicked gallimimus run was filmed at Kualoa Ranch, near the location where a similar scene was filmed for 'Jurassic Park' (1993).
