Short description
A chronicle of the life of infamous classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven and his painful struggle with hearing loss. Following Beethoven's death in 1827, his assistant, Schindler, searches for an elusive woman referred to in the composer's love letters as "immortal beloved." As Schindler solves the mystery, a series of flashbacks reveal Beethoven's transformation from passionate young man to troubled musical genius.
What's left behind the scenes
- Anthony Hopkins was initially considered for the composer role, but the producers settled on Oldman, who, incidentally, also played the piano on screen: it is his hobby.
- The film was made with the support of Czech filmmakers; Zlatá Praha and its suburbs stood in for all the European cities indicated in the script, and the production designer was the well-known Czech set designer Jiří Hlupech.
- Beethoven's music is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti.
