Short description
A group of New Yorkers caught up in their romantic/sexual milieu converge at Shortbus, an underground Brooklyn salon infamous for its blend of art, music, politics, and carnality, and loosely inspired by various underground NYC gatherings that took place in the early 2000s. Here, gay couple Jamie and James meet Ceth, a young ex-model and aspiring singer.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the casting for the film "Shortbus," each applicant for a role submitted a 10-minute video describing their most significant sexual experience. Director John Cameron Mitchell received approximately 500 such recordings.
  • The role of a Shortbus club patron taking a cookie with marijuana from a tray was played by Jonathan Caouette – the creator of "Tarnation" (2003), on which Mitchell worked as an executive producer.
  • To make the actors feel more comfortable, the director and cinematographer worked nude during the filming of the sexual scenes.
  • The idea for one of the film's most unconventional episodes – the scene where James attempts to perform oral sex on himself – belongs to Mitchell. To realize the director's vision, Paul Dawson, who played James, practiced daily for three months using a book called "The Art of Autofellation" found online.
  • Participating in the filming of the movie nearly cost Canadian radio host Sook-Yin Lee, who played the role of Sophia, her job. Lee was able to save her position only thanks to pressure exerted on her employer, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), by cultural figures such as Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Stipe, and Yoko Ono.
