What's left behind the scenes

  • In 1995, DMA Design released the arcade game “Uniracers” (released as “Unirally” in Europe) for the SNES console, featuring arcade racing of pre-visualized 3D unicycles on two-dimensional tracks. Pixar sued, seeing the use of unicycles as a violation of their copyright. DMA designer Mike Daily, who had been with the company since day one, stated: “Pixar’s problem was that they seemed to think that any computer-generated image of a unicycle belonged to them.” Nevertheless, DMA Design lost the case and lost the rights to the game. Nintendo was forced to recall the entire print run of “Uniracers” cartridges and destroy them. Final sales totaled 300,000 copies, which was extremely low. According to video game historians and enthusiasts, the lawsuit with Pixar ruined a potentially successful game that was of interest to consumers.
