Evan Rachel Wood and Jonathan Jackson were originally slated for the leading roles, but due to changes in the film’s shooting schedule, they dropped out of the project along with director James Hayman and actress Annie Potts, who had been cast as Terry’s mother. The film’s setting was subsequently moved from New York to Los Angeles.
Initially, the project was titled "Heart of Summer", but since the release date was moved from August to October, the title was changed.
Rebecca De Mornay played the sculptor in the film. Before filming, she took lessons from Los Angeles sculptor Bruce Gray.
