- Dog's signature pistol, with a skull-decorated handle, was later used in filming the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogy, where it ended up with Captain Barbossa.
- The film broke the record for the largest box office losses: it only returned 11 out of the 100 million dollars invested in it. The reason for the failure was a disastrous advertising campaign. Due to the film’s box office failure, the 'Carolco' studio, which at that time had a blockbuster like 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' (1991) under its belt, went bankrupt and was auctioned off.
- The film's budget was initially planned to be 65 million, but was later increased to 98 million.
- Renny Harlin said that producer Mario Kassar suggested he cast his wife, Gina Davis, in the lead role, as he specifically wanted her for the part. According to the director, Gina Davis was initially afraid to participate in the filming, but eventually agreed.
- Harleen spoke about creating "Cutthroat Island" based on films like "Captain Blood" and "The Sea Hawk" starring Errol Flynn.
