The film's director, screenwriter, and producer, Jesse Armstrong, became interested in the topic of millionaires and billionaires in late 2023. He began working on the script in November 2024, when Donald Trump won the US presidential race, and worked very actively on the script during his 10-day stay in London. Work on the film was completed six months later.
Steve Carell and Jason Schwartzman (who played Randall and Hugo, respectively) noted that pre-production and filming itself went much faster than usual. Carell was offered a role in the project even before the script was fully ready. Jesse Armstrong reminded him from the very beginning that the film would be his directorial debut.
In search of filming locations, the filmmakers traveled around Colorado, British Columbia, Canada, and Wyoming. Ultimately, it was decided to film in Utah. The house shown in the film was found (and permission was obtained from its owners to use it for filming) at the very last moment. Everyone immediately agreed that it would be the perfect house for Jason Schwartzman's character.
