What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Annie Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain," which was first published on October 13, 1997, in the periodical “The New Yorker.”
  • The first draft of the screenplay was prepared by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana in the late 90s, but it never received financial support.
  • During the filming of the July 4th (Independence Day) celebration scene in Fort Macleod, extras were instructed to behave as if their hometown hockey team, the Calgary Flames, had just won the Stanley Cup.
  • During the filming of one scene, Heath Ledger had to jump into a lake naked. The director later decided to remove all "nudity" shots from the final version of the film. However, ubiquitous paparazzi managed to obtain several photographs of Heath from the set. Soon these scandalous pictures appeared on the internet and in the "yellow press."
  • Joel Schumacher and Gus Van Sant were considered as candidates for the director's chair.
  • Sienna Miller could have played Larin.
  • Matt Damon was offered one of the leading roles in the film, but he declined, believing that participation in this project could damage his career.
  • In an interview, Gyllenhaal said that during the filming of the kiss, they kissed so passionately that he thought Heath Ledger would break his nose.
  • When the 'collective farm foreman' appears in the pasture with bad news about Uncle Jack, he chops wood and, at that moment, places a log on the stump. As the foreman is about to leave, we see that the log is no longer there.
  • Alma Jr. (Ennis's daughter) has blue eyes at a very young age. Several years later, the grown-up girl has brown eyes.
  • As Ennis's wife is about to leave the supermarket with her children, their youngest daughter knocks over cans from a shelf. The manager says he will clean it up. And in the next shot, the cans are intact, as if nothing happened.
