What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on W. Somerset Maugham's novel *The Painted Veil* (1925), which was later republished in Russia under the title *The Patterned Veil*.
  • Nicole Kidman was considered for the lead role.
  • Carolina Link once developed this project and also worked on her own version of the script.
  • Edward Norton personally approved Naomi Watts for the role in the film.
  • Initially, the project was in development at "Yari's Stratus Film" studio. When Mark Gill, the former president of "Yari's Stratus Film", moved to "Warner Independent", he also brought this project with him.
  • During filming, Edward Norton suffered a back injury.
  • Filming took place in China, near Beijing and Shanghai, from late 2005 to early 2006.
  • In the scene where Walter Fain tastes water from the river, he holds a tin can with a rope attached. Firstly, the rope changes position between shots. Secondly, when Norton's character pours water from the tin can into a glass container, it's visible that the water doesn't enter it, but in the next shot, from a different angle, the glass container is full of water.
