The intimate scenes with Kevin Costner and Madeleine Stowe were not staged and were not rehearsed in advance. Director Tony Scott (1944-2012) simply ordered three cameras to be set up and gave the actors a signal to begin. Everything else was actor improvisation.
Initially, John Huston (1906-1987) was considered as the director, but he did not want to cast Costner in the lead role. However, after Costner starred in the commercially successful films "The Untouchables" (Brian De Palma, 1987) and "Bull Durham" (Ron Shelton, 1988), he gained enough clout to independently produce the film.
