What's left behind the scenes

  • One of the reasons for moving the filming from Spain to France was the political beliefs of Yves Montand, who opposed the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
  • Filming took place in 1970 and 1971 in Spain and France. In Spain, mainly in Andalusia and Almería. The Palace of La Calahorra, located in the Sierra Nevada, is visible in the opening scenes. The gardens of the Alhambra in Granada were used as the royal gardens. Scenes at the villa of Spanish grandees were filmed at the Isla Mínima ranch near Seville. A desert strip near Almería was used as the African desert. Other filming locations included Madrid, Barcelona, and Toledo. Interior scenes were filmed in France.
  • Burtville, who was supposed to play Blaz, died before filming began. He was replaced by Yves Montand.
  • Victor Hugo's novel «Ruy Blas» was also adapted for the screen in 1948 with Jean Marais in the main role and in 2002 with Gérard Depardieu.
